2024 has been a fabulous year of rediscovery for me, as I revisited everything I saw at the theatre and cinema in 1984 with my #OTD1984EllenSaw project. This nostalgic journey has not only revitalised my love for theatre but also reminded me why it holds such a special place in my heart. While I've always loved theatre, I’ll admit I had grown a little complacent - cinema is often easier and more affordable. But this year has reignited my passion for live performance and reviewing for The Spy in the Stalls has only deepened that love.
As 2025 approaches, I’ve been considering a new challenge that combines my love of both film and theatre. Seeing Pacific Overtures in early 2024 made me realise there were significant gaps in my experience of Stephen Sondheim’s work on stage or film. That discovery has inspired my plan for 2025: to fully immerse myself in the world of Sondheim - a towering figure whose genius has left an indelible mark on the world of musical theatre.
The Genius of Stephen Sondheim
Sondheim’s work is unparalleled in its complexity, wit and emotional depth. His musicals, whether they’re exploring the fractured fairy tales of Into the Woods, the lavish and bittersweet spectacle of Follies, or the dark and haunting melodies of Sweeney Todd, demand attention and reward it tenfold. He reinvented what musical theatre could be, turning it into a medium capable of tackling the most intricate themes of love, loss and the human condition.
The Plan: Theatre, Film and Beyond
To make this challenge both structured and enjoyable, I’ve joined the Stephen Sondheim Society. With their insights, resources and occasional special offers for theatre tickets, I hope to experience more of his musicals live. For the ones I haven’t seen or aren't able to see in the theatre, I’ll seek out film recordings or adaptations to fill in the gaps.
But my Sondheim-inspired challenge doesn’t stop there. Following his death, a list of Sondheim’s 50 favourite films began circulating. It’s an eclectic collection spanning eras, genres and styles, just as one would expect from someone of his brilliance. From early classics to modern masterpieces, dramas to musicals, it’s a list that reflects his wide-ranging tastes and deep understanding of storytelling.
In 2025, I plan to watch at least one of these films each week, weaving together the worlds of cinema and theatre.
Looking Ahead
This dual journey through Sondheim’s works and his favourite films feels like the perfect way to honour his legacy while deepening my own appreciation for two of my greatest loves. I’m excited to see where this challenge will take me, both as a fan and as someone always eager to explore the rich intersections of art, music and storytelling.
Here’s to 2025, and a year of Sondheim, cinema and the enduring magic of live theatre.
