Gothic Study Day

Updated: May 5, 2023

On 9 February 2019 I led a Study Day on Gothic Cinema at Saffron Screen. In the morning I gave an overview of Film Form and Gothic Cinema, and in the afternoon sessions looking at film adaptations of Dracula and Wuthering Heights. I do hope you can join us.

I did my MA in Gothic Studies at St Mary's University, and as a result have published some blogs on Gothic Cinema. You might find these of interest...

Behind the Gothic Candelabra is an extract from a conference paper I gave on films featuring plastic surgery, which was the subject of my dissertation.

Face 2 Face: Films featuring plastic surgery offers an overview of the recurrent themes in films featuring plastic surgery and a list of all the ones I watched as part of this research.

Gothic Inspirations was written on the back of the release of Crimson Peak, here I discuss The Castle of Otranto, the first novel considered to be 'Gothic'.

Although this blog is not directly linked to the Gothic, you may enjoy watching the film extracts discussed in Which Way? Alice film adaptations, as two of these did feature in my essay on Alice in Wonderland and the Gothic.

You may also like to check out my twitter hashtag #CheshireonAlice as I work my way through my vast collection of Alice in Wonderland film and TV adaptations @cheshellen.

I also revisited Jean Cocteau's sublimely Gothic La Belle et La Bete (1946).

Enjoy!

Always happy to chat about Gothic Cinema on twitter @cheshellen.
